Golden Grove FC made it three wins in three matches in the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) First Division when, on Tuesday, they held onto an early lead to edge Bendals FC one-nil and take their tally of points to nine in what could develop into a tightly contested race for promotion at the end of the season.
Nyique Baptiste scored what would turn out to be the lone goal of the contest when, in minute 39, he slammed home from close range. Golden Grove were then able to hold on to the slim lead to ensure their unbeaten record stays intact.
The Golden Grove men had previously beaten two former Premier Division champions, edging Five Islands 2-1 before beating English Harbour 2-0.
Ironically, Five Islands were 2-1 winners over English Harbour when the two clashed on Tuesday as well.
Five Islands scored both goals in the first half with Cordell Pelle putting them ahead in the 12th minute before Demario Roberts stretched their advantage in the 28th. Former national striker Clarence Marsh pulled a goal back for English Harbour when he struck in minute 64.
There was victory as well for Bluejays as they recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over FC Master Ballers at the Keithley Sheppard Recreation Park.
All three goals were scored in the first 23 minutes of the contest with Laurance James getting a brace. James scored his first in the 10th minute before Maleke Francis doubled their advantage just eight minutes later. James completed his double in the 23rd minute to ensure all three points for Bluejays.
In the other match contested Tuesday, Bolans FC played from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw against former top flight champions Parham FC when they met at ABFA’s Technical Center. Andy Daniel put Parham ahead when he struck in the 30th minute but a 51st-minute conversion from Javaughn Parker secured a point for Bolans.
