Former national cricket coach, Abdiel Hughes, has launched his Chance to Shine Academy, a body targeting young budding players between the ages of 5 and 20.
The academy, based at the New Winthorpes playing field, is held only on Fridays between the hours of 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm and caters for both boys and girls.
Hughes said the aim is to cater for all cricket loving youths both in and outside of the community.
“Well, I started from 5 to 15, and anyone who wants to come even though from 20 [years old] downwards because that can be more technical work which takes them into the nets. But I won’t refuse, you know, because I deal with all levels of cricket in my academy,” he said.
Hughes, who is also coach of the New Winthorpes Lions in the domestic cricket competitions, said the academy is part of his efforts to give back to the game that has given so much to him.
“I love cricket and cricket is my life. When I go on a cricket field, all stress dissipates [so] I love cricket and I like what I do and that’s why you see I get results. I know what I’m doing. It’s an academy so It’s not earmarked for New Winthorpes, but it’s at New Winthorpes playing field,” the coach said.
The camp carries a fee of $20 per session with registration done on the day of the session. Participants will be tutored in he basics of the game.
